TRAIN TRAVEL IN EUROPE: ITALY

I recently had a chance to take the Italian high speed rail branded as Frecciarossa by TrenItalia. I traveled on the Milan - Venice, Venice - Florence, Florence - Rome and Florence - Milan sectors.

The

competition to the partially-state owned TrenItalia is Italo - NTV which is privately owned. (Rakes used by Italo have a very interesting design where one boogie was shared between two cars, there's a picture out here)

The Frecciarossa trains are tested on speeds of 300kmph and above (based on the rake type). Operations on all the sectors i travelled on were limited to 250kmph.

There are several classes of travel and the pricing is very reasonable (at least for someone with the context of American railroad pricing). I paid between the range of тВм20 - тВм40 per sector across Business Class and Premium Economy class. It's variable, divided into fare classes most of which are non-refundable.

My Milan - Venice train ran into a service breakdown because of which it was delayed by 35 minutes. I got an email mentioning the policy where a traveller is entitled to a 25% refund for a delay between 30-59 minutes. Before I left my destination station, the refund was credited to me.

The best run was between Rome and Florence, the train ripped across the distance of 277kms in just about 1h20m, hitting 250kmph for most of it. It's the fastest run on a train that I've so far been on.

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
